Product Introduction

What is Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA)?

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a debilitating disease that affects the knee joint, leading to cartilage and bone damage and possible disability. Joint discomfort, stiffness, edema, decreased range of motion, and even weakness or numbness are typical symptoms that can severely impact daily activities. In an aging society, KOA is common among older adults, workers, and athletes. While acetaminophen and NSAIDs are commonly used for pain management, their long-term use is limited by adverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, heart, and blood system.

Clinical studies

Background:

Previous studies need to be summarized and updated. We aimed to assess the efficacy of laser acupuncture (LA) in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA) by meta-analysis.

Methods:

Electronic databases were searched for studies exploring the efficacy of laser acupuncture for osteoarthritis (OA). Data were collected from the beginning of the construction of each database to March 2022. "WOMAC total score", 'WOMAC stiffness score', 'WOMAC pain score', "WOMAC somatic function score " and "VAS score" were the main indicators of interest. Der Simon-Laird random effects analysis was used.

Results:

Twenty-five randomized controlled clinical trials met our criteria and were included (2075 patients). Comparisons of interest included local anesthesia versus sham local anesthesia (efficacy), local anesthesia versus needling (comparison of efficacy), local anesthesia combined with needling versus needling (efficacy as adjunctive therapy), and any other study using local anesthesia for treatment. Laser irradiation is effective in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Local anesthesia is also effective and has almost the same efficacy as laser irradiation. Local anesthesia can achieve almost the same results as hand needling, and in some studies is even superior to needling.

Conclusion:

The efficacy of laser acupuncture in patients with osteoarthritis varies to a greater or lesser extent; with appropriate laser parameters (904nm), the local laser group (LA) was more efficacious than the sham local laser group (Sham LA). The inconsistent results of many studies may be due to the lack of staging analysis of patients' conditions, inappropriate selection of acupoints, lack of distant allotment of acupoints, and irrational laser parameters. In addition, studies have found better efficacy with matching points, which is consistent with the concept of matching point application in TCM.
