These photosensitizers, owing to their molecular properties and charge, easily penetrate bacterial membranes, making them effective against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Initially, red/infrared diode lasers were utilized for a-PDT, demonstrating antibacterial efficacy against periodontal pathogens in vitro. Subsequent studies with red/infrared LED light have confirmed their effectiveness.
