Laser therapy for dogs is an alternative therapy used to manage pain, inflammation (swelling), and wound healing. The interaction between light from the laser and the dog's tissues is called photobiomodulation. Laser therapy uses light of a single wavelength ranging from visible red to infrared.

Advantages of Animal Laser Therapy
An Effective Pain Relief Option. Laser therapy helps your pet's body release endorphins, hormones that dull pain naturally. The therapy has no side effects and can improve your pet's comfort. Your pet may be able to decrease pain medication or stop taking it completely after laser therapy.
Less Inflammation and Swelling. Inflammation is common after surgery or an injury and may also be an issue if your pet has a chronic condition, like arthritis or hip dysplasia. In addition to causing pain, inflammation leads to swelling and stiffness. Laser therapy decreases inflammation by boosting blood circulation and helping the lymph system remove waste.
Quicker Healing. Laser therapy helps wounds heal and can shorten your pet's recovery from injuries and surgery. Laser therapy speeds tissue regrowth and improves the production of collagen, a protein that repairs damaged tissues.
Improved Mobility. Has a joint condition or disease slowed down your once-playful pet? Laser therapy decreases stiffness and pain, making it easier for your pet to move. Thanks to laser therapy, walking up the stairs or going for a walk may become much easier.
A Good Choice for Chronic Conditions. Laser therapy isn't just a good choice for wounds and injuries. It can also be used to control the symptoms of painful chronic conditions. Laser therapy is a good choice if your pet has pain caused by arthritis, dysplasia, neuromuscular disease, or other diseases and conditions.
An Alternative to Pain Medication. Pain medication isn't the best choice for all pets. Some can't take pain medication due to underlying conditions, while others can't tolerate the side effects of these medicines. Thanks to the pain-relieving benefits of laser therapy, your pet doesn't suffer if it can't take medication.
Super Pulsed Laser
The super pulsed laser (905nm) produces high powered light in billionth-of-a-second pulses. The power of each pulse drives the photons deep into the target tissue. Multi Radiance Medical's technology's power of up to 50,000mW creates a high photon density, strongly reducing pain and improving micro-circulation.
Infrared SLDs
Pulsed broad band infrared emitting diodes (875nm) penetrate shallower tissue depths than the laser but provide a broader spectrum of coverage.
Pulsed Red LEDs
Pulsed red light (660nm) penetrates shallower depths.
Pulsed Blue LEDs
Pulsed Blue Light (465nm) superficial penetration.
Static magnetic field
Static magnetic field keeps ionized molecules of tissue in a dissociated state, enhancing the body's potential to absorb energy.
Clinical studies
Purpose
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a therapeutic photobiostimulation therapy that has been shown to reduce swelling, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue healing. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy of LLLT on aseptic pyogenic granulomatous foot dermatitis in five dogs.
Materials and Methods
One lesion in each dog served as a control (treated with 0.0584% hydrocortisone acetate propionate spray), and one or more other lesions received irradiation with a COZING-T05V (808 nm) handheld laser once a day for 5 days. Lesions were scored before treatment (D0), at the end of treatment (D4), 16 days after the last laser treatment (D20), and 2 months after treatment (D65).

Results
Clinical scores were similar in the treatment group compared to the control group on post-treatment day 0, but statistically significant differences existed on post-treatment days 4 and 20; statistically significant improvements were observed in the treatment group over time between post-treatment days 0, 4, and 20. At day 65 post-treatment, more than 50% of the lesions had not recurred. No adverse reactions were reported.
Conclusion
Given the positive results of the first clinical study, it would be interesting to expand the study to confirm the effectiveness of this type of therapy in aseptic pyogenic granulomatous foot dermatitis in dogs.
