Clinical studies
Background: Athletes must maintain optimal strength. Previous studies have explored the effects of low-intensity laser therapy (LLLT) on muscle performance. A previous systematic review and meta-analysis has explored this question in healthy subjects, but not yet in active athletes.
Objective: To explore whether low-intensity laser therapy (LLLT) improves muscle performance and soreness recovery in athletes.
Data sources: PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library.
STUDY SELECTION: Published randomized controlled trials and crossover studies up to December 2020.
Study design: Systematic evaluation and meta-analysis.
Level of evidence: Level 3.
DATA EXTRACTION: Study quality was assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment for Randomized Trials (Cochrane Handbook for the Systematic Evaluation of Interventions).
RESULTS: A total of 24 studies were included. Low-intensity laser therapy (LLLT) before exercise significantly improved lower limb muscle strength in the 24-hour, 48-hour, 96-hour and 8-week follow-up groups. Additionally, a trend toward improved soreness index, reduced serum creatine kinase concentrations, interleukin-6 and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance concentrations, as well as number of contractions and oxygen uptake (VO2 ) kinetic outcomes were observed.
CONCLUSIONS: Although the exact efficacy of LLLT has not been established, the available evidence suggests that LLLT improves muscle performance in physically active athletes. Additional large-sample, well-designed trials should be conducted before strong recommendations can be made.
