Cold Laser for Pain - Overview

Cold Laser Therapy or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and is thought to help accelerate the healing process. Advantages of Cold Laser for Pain

Totally noninvasive
Cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), is a noninvasive way to help heal superficial wounds (class 3A lasers) and deeper musculoskeletal pain conditions (class 3B lasers). Depending on the nature and location of your pain, we can set the laser to reach two to five centimeters below your skin—no incisions necessary.

Painless and soothing
The handheld cold laser device looks similar to a small flashlight. When we gently pass it across the treatment area, its non-thermal light photons painlessly penetrate your skin and subcutaneous fat tissues. At the same time, the laser's cold energy quickly begins to stimulate improved blood flow and dial down localized inflammation that has a direct soothing effect.

Multi-level healing

Cold laser therapy fosters healing at the cellular level to support recovery at the functional level. How does it work? It's all about how the targeted cells interact with the laser's energy and the cascade of healing effects that interaction sets into motion.

Varied applications

Noninvasive cold lasers are FDA-approved to treat a wide variety of pain conditions, ranging from muscle strain and joint stiffness to chronic back pain and even fibromyalgia.

Therapeutic support

Because cold laser therapy alleviates pain by advancing healing, it's an ideal care component in many circumstances. For example, athletes can use cold laser therapy to recover more quickly following competitive events. In contrast, people who are coping with a chronic pain condition can use the treatment to attain long-term relief without medication.

Application of Cold Laser for Pain

Minor injuries and sprains
Sports medicine and physical therapy practices often use cold laser therapy in the treatment of minor injuries and sprains.

Pain associated with muscle spasms
It's also used to help reduce swelling and promote healing of the joints and soft tissue.

Inflammation
Dentists use cold lasers to treat inflamed tissues in the mouth and to heal ulcerations. Doctors use it to treat inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other chronic autoimmune diseases.

Aches and pains
Pain clinics use cold laser therapy to help people with acute or chronic pain from conditions such as fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Skin rejuvenation
Cold laser therapy is used to encourage skin rejuvenation. Dermatologists use it to treat various skin problems.

Wound healing
Cold laser therapy is also used to treat difficult-to-heal wounds, including wounds related to diabetes.

Acupuncture
Acupuncturists use cold laser therapy for clients who are uncomfortable with needles. The low-level laser beams can stimulate your acupoints the same way needles do, but without piercing your skin.

Precautions

Be careful treating children and sensitive adults. Start with a the smaller dosage for the first treatment.
Avoid treating someone with a fever.
Avoid treating or significantly reduce the dosage for patient that may be photosensitive or have a stronger reaction to light like patients that are taking any light sensitive drugs including thyroid medication, Retin-A, tetracycline and St. John's Wort.
Avoid treating people with sensitive skin.
Avoid treating any area with a sunburn or recent high sun exposure (including tanning booths). The laser can increase the reaction of these areas and increase the level of sunburn.
Suspend therapy if the patient is feeling pain from the treatment or if they have any unusual reactions to the therapy.
Avoid treating anyone with a coagulation disorder. Lasers can increase blood flow and this could result in unexpected consequences.
Be careful treating an area with a Tatoo or other dark marks. Dark ink can absorb all the energy and create a hot spot that might burn the skin. This is how laser tatoo removal works.
