1.Background and Objectives
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been shown to promote hair growth in males. This double-blind randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the safety and physiological effects of LLLT on females with androgenic alopecia.
2.Methods
Forty-seven females (aged 18–60 years, Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV, and Ludwig–Savin Baldness Scale patterns I-2, I-3, I-4, II-1, II-2) participated in the study. A transition zone of the scalp was selected, with hair trimmed to 3 mm in height, followed by tattooing and photography of the area. The active treatment group used a "TOPHAT655" device, featuring 21, 5 mW diode lasers (655 ± 5 nm) and 30 LEDs (655 ± 20 nm), resembling a bicycle helmet. The placebo group used a unit that looked identical but contained incandescent red lights. Participants applied the devices at home every other day for 16 weeks (60 treatments, 67 J/cm² irradiance, 25-minute sessions, and a 2.9 J dose). Follow-up and photographic assessments were done at 16 weeks, with hair counts evaluated by a blinded investigator using a 2.85 cm² photographic area. The primary endpoint was the percentage increase in hair counts from baseline.
3.Results
Forty-two patients completed the study (24 active, 18 placebo). No adverse events or side effects were reported. Baseline hair counts were 228.2 ± 133.4 (sham) and 209.6 ± 118.5 (active, P = 0.642). Post-treatment hair counts were 252.1 ± 143.3 (sham) and 309.9 ± 166.6 (active, P = 0.235). The change in hair counts from baseline was 23.9 ± 30.1 (sham) and 100.3 ± 53.4 (active, P < 0.0001). The percent increase in hair growth over the study period was 11.05 ± 48.30 (sham) and 48.07 ± 17.61 (active, P < 0.001), showing a 37% greater increase in hair growth in the active treatment group compared to the placebo group.
4.Conclusions
LLLT at 655 nm significantly improved hair counts in women with androgenetic alopecia, with results comparable to those observed in men using the same treatment parameters.
