Clinical studies

1.Background:

Allergic rhinitis and nasal polyposis are prevalent nasal conditions, yet current treatment options provide only limited effectiveness.

Objective:

This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic impact of low-energy narrow-band red light phototherapy on the clinical symptoms of allergic rhinitis and nasal polyposis.

2.Methods:

In a double-blind, randomized prospective study, 50 patients with allergic rhinitis and 10 patients with nasal polyposis underwent intranasal phototherapy using 650 nm light for 4.4 minutes, three times a day for 14 days (total daily dose: 6 joules). Twenty-nine patients with rhinitis and one patient with polyposis received sham phototherapy as a placebo. Symptom improvements were assessed through symptom scoring and clinical evaluation, which included pre- and post-treatment rigid and flexible nasendoscopy.

3.Results:

After the treatment, 72% of the allergic rhinitis patients reported symptom improvement, and 70% showed objective improvement upon endoscopic examination, compared to 24% and 3%, respectively, in the placebo group. These differences were statistically significant. No improvements were observed in the patients with nasal polyposis.

4.Conclusions:

Narrow-band red light phototherapy at 660 nm is an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis without complications such as polyps or chronic sinusitis, leading to significant symptom relief. Endoscopic examination should be used to identify suitable candidates for phototherapy.
