Clinical studies
1.Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-intensity laser therapy, involves the use of red and near-infrared light to promote healing, pain relief, and anti-inflammation. The primary chromophores have been identified as cytochrome c oxidase and calcium channels in mitochondria (possibly mediated by light absorption by retinoids). Secondary effects of photon absorption include increased ATP, transient bursts of reactive oxygen species, increased nitric oxide, and modulation of calcium ion levels. Tertiary effects include activation of a variety of transcription factors, resulting in increased cell survival, promotion of proliferation and migration, and facilitation of the synthesis of new proteins.PBM has a pronounced biphasic dose-response, whereby low-intensity light has a stimulatory effect and high-intensity light has an inhibitory effect.
2.PBM has been found to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in normal cells, but ROS levels are reduced when used in oxidative stress cells or in animal models of disease.PBM is able to upregulate antioxidant defenses and reduce oxidative stress.
